Fan Mail for Sylvia!

Hello Sylvia:

I wanted to connect with you after about 13 years. I owe you a great deal as it was your course in NYU’s school of continuing education that got me excited about event marketing, then into the circus. From there the rest is history (please see attached bio which takes you through my career to 2007).

Last year I started my own consulting business (The Trias Group) where I returned to work with Ringling Bros doing Hispanic marketing in Southern California. I also have partnered with a traditional agency called The Ballpark (TheBallpark.com) to build out their offerings on the Hispanic, Event, Sponsor sides.

Needless to say I owe you a great deal. I assume you have inspired and opened up doors for many others as well.

Thanks and feel free to let me know if you need anything on the west coast.

Sylvia Teams Up With Kitegang To Enrich Students’ Lives!

Sylvia is adding products aimed at enriching the lives of the students, in the Sylvia’s Children community, to her humanitarian efforts.

“We are primarily focused on providing humanitarian relief support, such as medical and nutritional programs, school infrastructure, educational tools, etc. to the children in the Mbiriizi Advanced Primary School in Uganda, “ says Sylvia. “However, by teaming up with Kitegang we will be able to add some much-needed fun to the lives of these children who have so little. Twenty-five percent of our students are orphans and these gifts will be a welcome surprise.”

Sylvia is headed for Uganda in July with a support team of teachers, board members, trustees and professionals. In addition to bringing more guitars and other musical instruments, she hopes to bring a number of large kites and giant plastic exercise balls as a surprise for her 900+ "grandchildren".

About Kitegang
Kitegang is a 501(c)(3) non-profit toy company, with its roots in Minnesota, and aspirations in every orphanage and slum around the globe, where children find themselves lacking the tools to dream a little higher.

Operationally, Kitegang increases economic development opportunities on the margins of the developing world, especially focusing on manufacturing kites and other toys within urban slums, rural communities, and refugee camps, where children and their families face limited opportunities.

The profits from these activities are then used to finance the distribution of kites and other inspirational toys to schools and orphanages requesting such resources. Utilizing these tools, Kitegang seeks to help energize conventional education, and increase connectivity between children around the world.

With the belief that play is a basic developmental need for children, Kitegang hopes to augment the larger efforts of the development community, and in turn make the world of tomorrow dream a little higher.

Happy Mother's Day From Sylvia!

Frances Richey reads from and discusses The Warrior: A Mother’s Story of a Son at War, her stunning, urgent, and heart-wrenching memoir, written in verse, about a mother who sees her son, a Green Beret and captain in the Army, go off for two tours of duty in Iraq.

The Warrior centers around a mother’s love for her son, a son from whom she feels distant both literally and metaphorically, for she is a liberal who is against the war, but who realizes that she needs to accept and support the choice her son has made, and to try to understand what has drawn him to the military life. The poems explore the agonizing process of a mother who is always saying goodbye to her son, missing her son, praying for her son, waiting for her son to come home.

Yahoo Launches Site Focused on Women

Yahoo Inc. on Monday launched a site for women between ages 25 and 54, calling it a key demographic underserved by current Yahoo properties.

The site, Shine, is aimed largely at giving the struggling Internet company additional opportunities to sell advertising targeted to the key decision-maker in many households. Yahoo said advertisers in consumer-packaged goods, retail and pharmaceuticals have requested more ways to reach those consumers.

Amy Iorio, vice president for Yahoo Lifestyles, said internal research also shows women are looking for a site to combine various content and communications tools.

"These women were sort of caretakers for everybody in their lives," she said. "They didn't feel like there was a place that was looking at the whole them - as a parent, as a spouse, as a daughter. They were looking for one place that gave them everything."

Yahoo is entering a market already served by Glam Media Inc. and iVillage, a unit of General Electric Co.'s NBC Universal. It is Yahoo's first site aimed at a single demographic, although other Yahoo sites like Finance and Sports already draw specific audiences.

With Shine, Yahoo plans to expand its offerings in parenting, sex and love, healthy living, food, career and money, entertainment, fashion, beauty, home life, and astrology.

Shine likely will replace the existing Food site over time, although Yahoo plans to keep its Health site operating to serve men and women of other age groups.

Yahoo is working with media companies like Hearst Communications Inc. and Rodale Inc. to develop Shine-exclusive content. Hearst publishes Redbook, Cosmopolitan, Good Housekeeping and other magazines aimed at women, while Rodale publishes a range of magazines on sports and recreation, including Women's Health.

Yahoo also has hired a team of editors to produce original material and to seek out items of interest from elsewhere in Yahoo.

Unlike most other Yahoo sites, Shine will be presented in a blog form, with newest items on top and commentary from an editor.

Happy Holidays, Everyone!

The Nutcracker ballet opened in St. Petersburg on December 17, 1892. It is the tale of a girl named Clara who is given a nutcracker doll for Christmas by her godfather, Drosselmaier. That night she falls asleep and is disturbed by an attack of mice led by the Mouse King, who wishes to take her away to his kingdom. She is rescued by soldiers of the Nutcracker who, as a prince, takes her to his land, a country full of sugarplums and waltzing flowers. She awakens the next morning with only the doll and memories of her Christmas adventure.

The original production was not an overwhelming success. Though popular in Russia it was never staged outside of that country until 1934, when it appeared in London. Since then numerous versions have been created, with the most successful being that by George Balanchine performed in 1954. The ballet is probably the world’s favorite ballet, being seen by millions each year, especially during the Christmas season.

My Best Wishes For A Joyous Holiday Season And Happy 2008!
